FAQs

Question: How many events do you offer a year?

Answer: We typically offer a winter trip that includes a range of snow-related activities such as skiing, skating, snowshoeing, and sledding. Our Labor Day event takes place at a Christian Science summer camp and includes all the outdoor activities those venues provide such as swimming, hiking, waterskiing, boating, challenge courses, and more. In the past, ASCSA members have hosted fall cruises and New Year’s events. We are always open to new ideas!

Q: How do I register for an event?

A: Go to our “Events” tab and follow the links on the event you would like to register for. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at: mail.ascsa@gmail.com

Q: Do your events have social activities like “speed dating” and stuff like that?

A: We are not a dating service. We simply enjoy companionship with an emphasis on a shared love of Christian Science and the outdoors. We might get a game of team Marathon Pictionary going (it involves sprinting and leaping over obstacles). And we have been known to line dance, East/West Coast swing,  limbo and skip around the room to “Come on Eileen.”

Q: Do you have local chapter events?

A: Some ASCSA attendees will organize events in their regions such as dance weekends, hikes, and fun runs. Want to organize one? Send us an e-mail at mail.ascsa@gmail.com and we’ll help you get started or visit our Local Gatherings page.

Q: Do I have to be single to attend your events?

A: All we ask is that you are not legally married. See Local Gatherings page for events open to friends of ASCSA who are married. Some dating couples appreciate ASCSA events as a way to have an adventure together in a morally and spiritually focused atmosphere.

Q: What is the average age attend of attendees, or will there be someone there my age?

A: All kinds of ages attend all of our activity-filled events. In general, the majority of attendees tend to be in their 30s and 40s, but we have participants that range from early 20s to 80s. Essentially, think of this as a family outing. You’ll find one of every flavor!

Q: Is there an equal number of men and women at the events?

A: This is beyond our control, but the kinds of events we offer are appealing to both men and women and we have found a “gender balance” occurs pretty naturally.

Q: Back to this ‘singles’ thing. Will I find my soulmate?

A: Again, that’s not our purpose. There have been some lasting relationships and marriages that have come out of ASCSA events but most people are delighted to make new and excellent friends who have similar life experiences and interests. We like to think of ourselves as a family of friends.

Q: Can I bring a friend who is not a practicing Christian Scientist?

A: The ASCSA board is always happy to include guests who are new to Christian Science or interested in learning more about it. Please be in touch at mail.ascsa@gmail.com so we can get a sense if a particular event will be the best fit for your friend.
