The Quincy was chosen for its affordability and convenient location!

Important hotel info:

1. The 8 rooms reserved for ASCSA are all King Bed Studios and the rates we are providing are based on you sharing not only the room, but also the king bed with someone of the same gender.

2. Rooms have small refrigerators and microwaves, free wi-fi in the room, flat screen TVs, hairdryers, laptop size safe and much more!

3. The rates we were given for these rooms is very affordable for downtown D.C. and cheaper than doubles.

4. Roll-a-ways are available and payment would be made directly to the hotel upon check-in. The cost is $20 per night. We would expect you and your roommate to equitably share that cost if you choose to have a roll-a-way put into your room.

5. If we have more people sign up than the number of bed spaces already reserved, we will inquire with the hotel about adding more rooms, and if possible, double rooms; and we will inquire about the possibility of switching the current king rooms to doubles/queens without an additional cost.

6. If you have a desire to have a room completely to yourself, please be in touch with event co-hosts Jennifer Doak or William Battle as to whether that is possible. The hotel cost would be close to $700 (this price does not include activity expenses).

Labor Day 2011′s life has ended, but the spirit lives on, in what can only be described as a soulful and enriching time. It started on the shore of Lake Michigan with ice breaking activities on a balmy Thursday evening, followed by the weekend’s first bonfire. The fire blazed with stars overhead and a dramatic lighting storm slowly moving in from across the lake.

There were a diverse range of activities to take advantage of and the Active in ASCSA was well expressed with enthusiastic tennis, ping pong, foosball, and euker players testing their skills throughout the weekend. The camp’s offerings of hiking, dune climbing, biking, ropes course, kayaking, canoeing, climbing wall, and new this year, zip-line, were well taken advantage of as well. Of special note was Nancy Moothart scoring the first official basket on the zipline after an entire season of attempts by both campers and staffers.

A movie night was a spontaneous event and Labor Day first. The proposed movie marathon became a single attraction, which featured “Avatar.” Kudos to the camp for putting together the sound and projection system last minute to help make it happen!

Another Labor Day first was the tall ship cruise aboard the Manitou. A strong contingency enjoyed a unique offering of northern Michigan with a two-hour sail on Grand Traverse Bay. The winds were favorable, and while rain threatened, it was smooth sailing all the way. The outing was even joined by a couple of ASCSA alums in the area.

Dance was an expanded theme this year with lessons in Contra, line, and swing, and dancing to music ranging from Hawaiian to Techno. Even the atmosphere was enhanced with club lighting via some technical creativity courtesy of Chris Rownd.

A clear highlight, as always, is the outstanding job the camp staff did of keeping everyone very well fed with a daily menu that went well beyond “camp” kind of expectations.

Of course, all of the outings and activities are so many opportunities to connect, share, and bond with our fellow Christian Scientists. First time ASCSA attendee Gordon Myers summed it up perfectly: ”…the best part by far was the new friendships forged, and the deep discussions shared with new friends. This was definitely a group of thinkers, so the quality of discussion was superb. I’m so glad I attended and I would love to attend another ASCSA event!”

Just prior to Labor Day, the Sleeping Bear Dunes lakeshore was voted the most beautiful place in America. That designation was doubly true at Camp Leelanau and Kohahna with the uplifting atmosphere and motive by all to more deeply express our spiritual natures.

Other gratitude shared on our post-camp follow-up survey:

“Coming back to camp with the new theme this year of putting on the new man was just perfect. It followed on the heels of a summer filled with incredible spiritual growth and reminded me that there is this incredibly special network of people who are there supporting each other as we follow God’s plan. Labor Day, again, pushed me even further and talking and sharing experiences over the past year with people who were there really was inspiring.”

“The supportive atmosphere is great … good times with great spiritually minded friends.”

“Gratitude for all the funny instances over the weekend, remembering the dancing fun, the good food and the optimism of the entire group. It was all good!”

“For many years I have gone to this camp in another camp program, I have always thought the lake was too cold in October. This time with the ASCSA in September I was able to go into the lake and was overjoyed that this long standing limitation was overcome! I felt the desire to swim too. There was freedom!”

“New, wonderful community of friends – everyone so supportive and friendly; made me feel right at home as one of the ‘new kids on the block.’ Like the range of activities, some more adventurous than others. LOVED LOVED the morning lesson reading, church service, hymn sing. Loved living close to nature!”

ASCSA took on the Colorado Rockies to begin Summer 2011 by offering a trip to Ridge View Ranch in Ward, CO, during the week of June 24-July 1, 2011. With the Ranch as headquarters, participants hiked, toured, shopped, rode horseback and relaxed in nearby Estes Park, Nederland, Boulder, etc. The group was made up of anywhere from 4-8 participants at any given time.

After dinner and introductions the first night, the group joined one of the attendees, a “local” and long-time participant of ASCSA events, Pete Jordan, on an auto expedition of the Estes Park area the second day. This included a trip to the top of Trail Ridge Road with an elevation over 12,000 feet. He pointed out numerous trailheads and discussed many possibilities for hiking.

Since ASCSA is also about sharing Christian Science, the group went and joined with the Christian Science group in Estes Park Sunday morning for church and then attended a Scandinavian Festival at Bond Park. There was shopping, then an outdoor concert by a talented singer/guitar player.

The rest of the week included horse back riding, hiking trail Boulder Creek valley above Nederland, picnicking near a remote lake, a trip to Boulder, a Wednesday morning testimony meeting, more shopping and just enjoying each other’s company.

Evenings included learning two country line dances, the electric slide and some other kind of dance, as well as playing BananaGrams or Trivial Pursuit, just talking and sharing ideas about the Bible Lesson or other Christian Science topics.

Those who attended had a good time and appreciated the work of host, Bill Babcock. They will all take away the wonder and awe of the natural beauty of the Colorado Rockies!

2011 Labor Day Weekend!!

With the theme of “Putting off the old man and putting on the new”, this will be a time of literally putting off your day-to-day (old) responsibilities and routines, surroundings, and people, and joining us for a time of reNEWal, relaxation, and sheer enjoyment of fellow Christian Scientists, beautiful scenery, activities, and No-repeat-NO responsibilities other than simply showing up!

We are back for our third year at Camps Leelanau & Kohahna and can confidently tell you few places offer the setting, facilities, and range of activities of these camps. Set within the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore park system, there are numerous spectacular landscapes to explore, which alone, make the trip worthwhile. However, we have a wide range of activities available to take advantage of: water skiing, hiking, biking, tennis, swimming, ropes course, bonfires, dancing, and more.

Leaping in the Sand Dunes!

We also have several off-camp adventures to try this year including a day trip to South Manitou Island and a tall ship cruise on Grand Traverse Bay.

While any and all of these activities are for your simple enjoyment or great challenge, our goal is to have you leave this weekend with a sense of renewal and expansion of your Christian Science family. We will begin the weekend by coming together as a group with a fun getting to know each other evening. After each day of your chosen activities, we will come together for dinner and story trading, followed by evening “entertainment,” culminating with our dance party Sunday night.

It is a time to both make your own as well as simply enjoy being part of an incredibly uplifting, supportive group. The connections, camaraderie, and bonds formed from this weekend can last a lifetime.

The Ranch is about 20 miles from Estes Park, located off the Peak-to-Peak Highway, one of Colorado’s best scenic highways. Nearby activities include horseback riding, fishing, hiking, exploring historic mining towns, plus a breath-taking trip over Trail Ridge Road — the highest auto road in the country.

You’ll experience alpine tundra, vistas stretching for miles, wildlife, lunch at “the top of the world” visitor center — or in Grand Lake, a beautiful town on the north side of Colorado’s largest natural lake.

A Rocky Mountain National Park “Park Pass” is required — $20.00 for the week per car (or $10 for those 62 and older.) If you are driving in or renting a car at DIA, let us know if you have space for others as carpooling is a great option and will help pay for your rental expense.

During the day, you can hike, fish, go horseback riding, take pictures, relax, read, study– however you want to spend your time. At night, enjoy a meal at one of Estes Park’s many fine restaurants, go to a movie at one of two theaters in town, play miniature golf, shop, or make a fire back at the lodge and relax with friends.

Fishing: You will need a Colorado license (one-day & multiple-day licenses are available). Host Bill Babcock is an avid fly fisherman and can help provide instruction. Rentals are available in town.

Golf: There are two courses in Estes Park. Bring your clubs or rent.

Hiking: Many trails for all abilities are available, both in RMNP and around Estes Park and our Lodge. Bring hiking boots and rain poncho.

Horseback Riding: There are many places to rent a horse or take a trail ride in the area.

INITIAL SCHEDULE
